It seems like when I turn on my computer I have 10 different programs starting that I dont want or need and its really slowing things down.. I used to have something in control panel I could use but now its gone.. Anyways is there something I need to download? And how do I know wether or not I need that program to start up like if its someting really important? How do I control what programs start when I turn on my computer?
You can click start-----click run-----type msconfig------click startup tabs, then you can uncheck programes that dont need to run at startup. Then click ok to exist..And you also can go visit http://www.make-pc-fast.com to download a speedup software.

Good luck! How do I control what programs start when I turn on my computer?
As general background on where applications start up from:

1%26gt; StartUp Folder

under Start %26gt; All Programs

Actual entries can reside under your user profile OR the ';All Users'; profile which as its name suggestions, applies to all users of that computer

2%26gt; Run key in the registry

under HKey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Wi鈥?Version/Run

This is where the majority of programs which auto start put themselves if they don't appear in the start up folder. You can edit this directly by click on Start %26gt; Run %26gt; and typing ';Regedit'; followed by hitting [OK] or the ENTER key

You can Use a program called MSConfig to toggle items on and off while you figure out which apps you want/don't need.

BUT, for a long term solution.. I, personally, don't prefer using MSConfig because it doesn't permanently remove the entries and sometimes causes duplication of entries if you reinstall a program.

BUT, for simplicity sake, you can simply click on Start %26gt; Run %26gt; and type in ';msconfig'; followed by hitting [OK] or the ENTER key

Click on the Start Up tab and uncheck a few programs that you don't need to run all the time.

After rebooting your system, a window will pop up altering you to the fact that you have used ';Selective Startup'; -- put a checkmark in the bottom left to NOT see this message again.

After a couple of days, if everything works fine, then replace the checkmarks, reboot and use Regedit to navigate to HKey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Wi鈥?Version/Run and permanently delete the items you had previously unchecked using MSConfig. This is the cleanest way to remove startup entries from your system.
Go to start menu click on run

type in msconfig

and when you get the table click on Startup (it on the top where it says general, system, etc.) and click on the programs you want to start when you turn on your computer and the ones you don't want them to start also.

It will let you know if the program is important or not.
You can arrange startup by typing msconfig on Start -%26gt; Run

I recommed Tuneup Utillities 2008 for fully control your computer
go to the RUN icon and tye in msconfig and hit enter, look for an icon that says Boot, in there you can decide which programmes you want to run on start up but be carefull. then re-start your computer

With pc optimizer pro you can safely clean, repair and optimize your computer.

It will help improve your system performance.

Good luck!
a good free program to help with this and other stuff is ccleaner.
start -%26gt;run -%26gt; Msconfig
download tuneup utilities 2008. its a programs that cleans and repair. It also has a start up program center which you can control which programs you would like to start.. and which not.
start %26gt; run %26gt; type MSCONFIG

you can control what start with windows from in there
Stomp auto-starting programs. Click Start %26gt; Run and type ';msconfig'; at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need ';Adobe Reader Speed Launch';? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable your anti-virus and important system components.
Do control panel--%26gt; run--%26gt; startup programs and you can choose which programs run at startup...

also another way is some programs have something taht says run this program at startup if it helps, such as AIM and rocketdock... hope you solve your issue!
iMac-

In the system preferences( apple %26amp; light switch) you go to accounts(at the bottom left), then login items- then you click on each thing in the box once and click the minus sign at the bottom.
I agree with Samuel Adams that msconfig is the basic way to turn off auto start programs. But if you're looking for a more detailed program, try Autoruns. It is free and has more detailed. It is always advisable to do a quick search on each startup item before you delete it lest it is important for some program to run automatically. For more info and free download on Autoruns, here is the link.

you...

go to start on you pc.. then go to start up icon.. an click it and it should be there...

Or else... aaha jk

GOOOD LUCK!
start %26gt; Run %26gt; ';type in'; msconfig %26gt; OK %26gt; click on the Startup tab on the far right.......

uncheck the programs you dont want to start when you turn the PC on.

Be very careful using msconfig dont make any changes you arent sure of, in fact do a full save or backup HD before you try this.
Do this:

1. Go to Start-%26gt;Run-%26gt;type ';msconfig';

2. A box appears.... go to the last tab, and then de-select the ones you don't want WINDOWS to start for you when the PC loads.

3. Save the box, and it asks u to restart. Restart.
