How can a control freak become a better and humble person?

Someone very dear to him forced him to think on these lines. And he wants to change not for his own sake, but for his loved ones as well. How can a control freak become a better and humble person?
A brush with death would probably do it. In Tibet, when a young Buddhist monk in training gets too cocky and arrogant, he is directed to the charnel grounds for a few days and nights of meditating on death. The charnel ground is where bodies are taken after they are publicly cremated, chopped up and left for the vultures, who sit around the walls waiting for new corpses. It tends to bring you down to earth and gets you back on track to live the four immeasurables: Lovingkindness, Compassion, Sympathetic Joy and Equanimity. Maybe a couple of nights sitting in the middle of a cemetary with all those tombstones around him might work.

Contemplating on death has a way of bringing you face to face with reality and the need to be a compassionate human being. How can a control freak become a better and humble person?
This person must learn to 'step back' and watch his tongue.
