Conventional high cholesterol treatment for lowering cholesterol levels is prescription statin drugs. Unfortunately, statins don't distinguish between ';bad'; cholesterol (LDL) and ';good'; cholesterol (HDL). They also reduce Co-enzyme Q10 and L-carnitine levels, important in energy production and fat metabolism. Side-effects like myalgia and stomach, lung and liver tumors have been associated with use of these drugs.

Statins have been around since the late 1980's. I believe Mevacor was the first one. Lipitor came out in the mid 1990's.
