How do you control an out of control cat?

HELP! My cat is crazy. I have bought him tons of toys to play with, yet he insists on tearing up everything in my house. He gets in the trash, climbs on shelves and breaks my picture frames, chews on cords, he even has eaten my homework before (no joke, he chewed it to pieces). I have tried using a spray bottle to squirt him when he is messing up things, but he goes right back to it. Is there any way to keep him from being so destructive?How do you control an out of control cat?
First of all don't listen to most of these retarded answers. Do not spank a cat- it won't know why you're abusing it and will probably go and pee on something if you do. A scratch post will give him something to play on. Also, try SoftPaws. They go over the cats nails and then it won't scratch up your furniture. I put double sided tape on the places the cat was tearing up and she hated it and quit ripping up my stuff. It sounds like your cat is bored, lonely, or a kitten. Until your cat is trained you have to treat it like it is a small child and 'cat proof' your house. Also, usually after you have them spayed or neutered, they calm down. It takes time for them to adjust to a new home.How do you control an out of control cat?
I have some of the same issues with my cat.. i know partially she scratches furniture to help with her claws, you should buy your cat a scratch post from the pet store.. as for the other issues, I am not sure how to stop them.. maybe you can call your vets office and they can refer you to some people who can help out with animal behavior..

Don't keep him kenneled thats a terrible suggetion.If you cats young its jut normal kitten behavior. They play hard then sleep.if the cats not fixed that will help. Another thought get another kitten to keep this one busy and for company.Spend time playing with your cat daily. Don't expect any cat to go play with its toys alone. It doesn't happen. they enjoy interaction with their owners.

Get him fixed. There is also a spray you can buy to keep him away from places you don't want him to go. Petsmart or Petco people would know what you're talking about.
How old is your cat? Is it a kitten? Is he just playing? You can crate him or place him in a room where he can't tear things up. Cats can be trained like a dog. I've used a rolled up newspaper on mine when he misbehaves. A squirt gun can help when he is climbing the curtains and such. Good luck.
Neuter him, then go to the library and get books on training your cat. If he's still young, there may be some hope that he'll calm down after a year or so.
how old is he?? if he is a kitten this is typical behavior





if he is an older cat he may need to be neutered





he might have tons of toys but are they the right kind of toys and being rotated - cats like things they think are new - so hide some of his toys and every week change the toys around, like have 3 sets of toys so each set is hidden for 2 weeks so he thinks they are new toys





honeysuckle toys are very good he should have an assortment of textures in the toys, hard balls, soft balls, mousetoys, crinkle toys, cat nip toys..., jingle toys
take him to the vet....they can prescribe a cat version of prozac to calm him down.

how many scratch posts do you have? do you have a cat tree, if not get one they are like 30 bucks at walmart that go floor to celing. use double sticky tabe places you don't want your cat and keep your homework where your cat can't get to it.

Take him/her for an hour drive and let it loose.
Keep the cat kenneled, at home, unless are playing with him and monitoring him. He sounds like he is not getting enough positive attention. And my kenneled, I mean in an totally enclosed cat carrier. And, have you had the cat neutered? This is very important, too.
Young cats need a lot of play and stimulation. Perhaps you aren't spending enough time with him.





You could consider getting another cat to give him company during the day and provide play time when you can't.





when I first got my kitten I kept her in the bathroom with lots of food, water and her litterbox when I wasn't home because it was a fairly large bathroom and she good do minimal damage in there. I only let her out when I was home and could keep an eye on her until she became used to everything.





Also, don't leave all of his toys out at once - just a couple at a time to avoid his getting ';over stimulated';

It depends. He should be neutered as soon as possible. If he is still a kitten, just try to provide an environment which is calm, quiet, and affectionate. Don't encourage rough playing with humans. If he is a neutered adult, there's probably not much you can do.





Every cat has a different personality. He could have a ';wild'; temperament. If so, that's just the way he is.
Nueter him! and when we got our cats we bought a large dog kennel and just put them in that with food, water, litter box, and a bed with some toys. that kept them out of the way when we couldnt keep an eye on them. When u can, Walk around the house with him and keep using the squirter, remember be patient!

everytime it does something bad, go up to it with a water gun (purchased at your local dollar store) and give the cat a good squirt in the face while sterning saying ';NO!! BAD!!'; and looking angry. cats dont like water.
